Hair extensions are not a set-and-forget indulgence. They are an investment, and like all investments, they require care. Neglect will show quickly: dryness, tangles, matting, and premature shedding. Follow these instructions with the same precision your extensions were installed with, and they will reward you with longevity, shine, and effortless wear.
WASHING
1. Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo Only: Choose Deep Muk Ultra Soft Shampoo. Sulfates strip moisture, and moisture is what your extensions can’t generate on their own. Unlike natural hair, extensions don’t receive nourishment from the scalp’s oils. Wash with anything harsh, and you will notice brittleness and frizz creep in.
2. How Often to Wash: 1–2 times a week. Over-washing dries extensions out; under-washing lets oils and dirt suffocate the bead line. Both scenarios end the same way — compromised bonds and hair that looks tired before its time.
3. How to Wash: Tilt your head back in the shower, smooth shampoo down the lengths, and avoid rough scrubbing at the seam. Treat your extensions like silk, no upside-down rinsing, no circular scalp massage.
CONDITIONING
1.Hydration Is Non-Negotiable: Apply Deep Muk Ultra Soft Conditioner every time you wash. Always keep it off the beads and root area — conditioner there will cause slipping. Work it through mid-lengths to ends with a wide-tooth comb, gently.
2. Deep Treatment: Once a week, drench your extensions with Deep Muk 1 Minute Treatment. Skip this step and you’ll feel your extensions stiffen, knot, and lose their lustre. Hydration is what separates flowing, glossy hair from the brittle, synthetic-looking finish that screams neglect.
DRYING
1. Pat, Don’t Rub: Blot with a soft towel. Rubbing creates friction, and friction causes cuticle damage. Damaged cuticles equal tangling.
2. Blow Dry Correctly: Always dry the spine and root area thoroughly. Leaving beads damp is a fast-track to bacterial growth, odour, and matting. Mid-lengths and ends can air dry if preferred, but the base must be dry before you walk away.
BRUSHING
1. The Right Tool: Only ever use a wide-tooth comb or the ‘Visie’ Boar Bristle Extension Brush. Start at the ends, move up in sections. Pulling from the root will tear out your wefts and stress your scalp.
2. Daily Detangling: Extensions must be brushed morning and night. Skip this and knots form at the seam, leading to matting so severe your only option may be removal and cutting away the damage.
STYLING
1.Heat Styling: Extensions can be styled with heat but always prep with a thermal protectant. Unprotected heat weakens the hair fibre, causing split ends that can’t be trimmed out without shortening your extensions.
2.Avoid Oily Styling Products: Keep oils and silicone serums away from the seam. They break down beads and shorten wear time. Apply only from mid-lengths down.
SLEEPING
1.Night Prep: Brush gently, then braid or tie your extensions in a loose braid before bed. Sleeping with loose hair invites tangling and matting that doesn’t disappear with morning brushing.
2.Silk Pillowcase: Swap cotton for silk. Less friction, less damage, more shine.
SWIMMING
Pool & Ocean: Extensions soak up chlorine and salt like a sponge. Before you swim, wet hair with fresh water and coat the ends with Deep Muk Ultra Soft Conditioner. After swimming, rinse immediately. Neglect this and you’ll see discolouration, dryness, and a rough texture set in.
SUN PROTECTION
Sunscreen & Tanning Products: Chemical filters in sunscreens and fake tans can stain light colour extensions peach, orange, or pink. Apply carefully, keeping product away from hair. Once stained, colour correction is unpredictable at best.
THE NON-NEGOTIABLES
Never sleep with wet extensions.
Never skip conditioning.
Never use supermarket shampoos or heavy oils at the root.
Never ignore brushing.
When followed, these guidelines will keep your extensions luminous, manageable, and worthy of the investment you made. When ignored, the hair will turn dry, matte, tangled, and in some cases, irreparable, forcing early removal and wasted money.
