Most people do best with 1–2 washes per week. Too frequent washing can dry lengths. Too little washing can create build-up at the scalp.
If you want your extensions to last, treat your routine like maintenance, not a gamble. Extension-safe products reduce dryness, tangling and premature shedding.
Yes. Every time. Extensions do not "bounce back" the way healthy natural hair can.
Buy the tool that solves the problem.
If you mat easily: Choose a brush designed for extensions and detangle in sections.
If you're dry on the ends: Add leave-in hydration and a weekly mask.
If your colour goes dull: Use controlled heat, heat protection, and a monthly clarifying reset.
If you're active or in the sun: Prioritise UV defence, hair-up styling, and post-sweat wash hygiene.
Sunscreen can stain extensions. Prevention is the fix.
Sunscreen residue is one of the most common causes of discolouration in blonde and light tones. Once staining happens, it's often permanent without compromising the hair.
Your prevention checklist
- Tie hair up in a bun or braid to reduce contact.
- Wash hands after applying sunscreen, then avoid touching your hair.
- Keep sunscreen off the nape and lengths where hair sits on skin.
- Choose formulas that are oil-free and extension-friendly.
Do this. Not that.
- Do brush twice daily with the right brush. Not a harsh paddle brush that rips at knots.
- Do keep sunscreen, makeup and fragrance off your lengths. Not touch your hair after applying product to your skin.
- Do book maintenance every 6–8 weeks. Not wait until it feels heavy, tight or matted.
- Do protect hair before swimming and wash straight after. Not let chlorine or salt dry inside the hair.
- Do dry your scalp fully. Not air-dry the base and hope for the best.

The routine that makes extensions wear like yours
If your routine is inconsistent, your results will be too. Save this, follow it, and your hair will stay softer for longer.
Daily
- Morning: Brush gently from ends to roots, then secure hair in a low pony or braid if you're active.
- Before heat styling: Always apply heat protection, then style on controlled heat (high heat is not "extra hold", it's extra damage).
- Night: Brush, then sleep with hair secured in a loose braid or low pony. Friction is what creates matting.
Wash day (1–2 times per week for most extension wearers)
- Shampoo the scalp thoroughly (that's where build-up lives).
- Smooth conditioner through mid-lengths to ends (avoid heavy application at the attachment points).
- Gently squeeze water out, towel blot, then apply leave-in hydration.
- Dry the scalp properly. Damp roots are where tangling and discomfort begins.
Weekly
- Moisture mask: Once a week through mid-lengths and ends to maintain softness and shine.
Monthly
- Clarifying reset: Once a month to remove residue from oils, dry shampoo, minerals and styling products so your hair behaves again.
