Before you take the photo

Four things make the difference between a reading you can trust and a guess.

• 01Stand near a window. Daylight, out of direct sun. Overhead bathroom light will read your colour two levels too warm.
• 02Turn off filters and beauty mode. They rewrite skin and hair tone, which is exactly what we are measuring.
• 03Hair down, dry and brushed through. Wet hair reads several levels darker than it dries.
• 04Get something white in the shot. Paper, a wall, a white top. We use it to cancel out your lighting.

Line up something white

Move the photo so the circle sits on white. This cancels out the light you shot in.

Line up your hair

Move the photo so the circle sits on your mid-lengths, then switch to your ends. When the swatch stops shifting, you are on hair.
